The residents of Takoma Park have joined together in many churches, neighborhood associations, civic groups, and arts organizations. We have concerts, exhibits, political crusades, dances, neighborhood parties, quilting bees, and volunteer action projects.
Over seven hundred businesses and non-profit organizations are located in Takoma Park, most of them small. This is a community of entrepreneurs. Some of these business now have home pages. 17,299 residents were counted in the census of 2000. These citizens are unusually diverse in age, ethnicity, language, economic condition, and length of residence. We are also the home of many writers, musicians, and artists. Several residents now have their own home pages .
We have a local police department, several parks , an extensive recycling program, a municipal library, an economic and community development program, and landlord-tenant services.

Takoma Park has a number of citizens' committees that address community policy and issues. Statutory committees are prescribed by City Code and members are appointed by the Council. Committees include: the Nuclear Free Takoma Park Committee, the Public Safety Citizens Advisory Committee, the Commission on Landlord-Tenant Affairs, the Ethics Commission, the Free Burma Committee, the Personnel Appeal Board, the Takoma Park Arts & Humanities Commission, the Takoma Park Committee on the Environment, the Takoma Park Recreation Committee and the Tree Commission.
Because we are now in the midst of a major urban area we are served by a number of newspapers, radio and television stations. The two local newspapers are the Takoma Park Newsletter and The Takoma Voice . Our local radio station is WGTS FM 91.9 . The Coffee House TV program is shown on a number of stations. We also have a local cable channel.
We have large city-wide celebrations throughout the year. These include our Independence Day parade and fireworks, a street festival , folk festival , jazzfest and many other events which bring visitors from throughout the Washington area.

The city now lies within completely within Montgomery County and borders the upper north-west/north-east boundary of Washington, D.C. It is less than 5 miles from the center of D.C.

The City of Takoma Park, the first planned commuter suburb in Montgomery County Maryland, was founded in 1883 by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert along the Metropolitan Branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

There are two colleges within the boundaries of Takoma Park: Columbia Union College and Montgomery College-Takoma Park . There are three parochial schools and public school students attend a variety of Montgomery County and Prince George's county schools.
Public transportation is readily available. Three major airports and Amtrak service are located nearby.
